I love the sea; I have written numerous poems about the sea. This is another one; Be warned, I go on a bit, its called obsession, I believe:-D DEEP WATERS Blue, Grey, Green, Brown.... Clear as crystal, Murky as mud... Placid, Smooth, Serene, Ethereal, Rippled, Tumultuous... The wide expanse Of the deep waters, Is highway, pay ground, hunting ground, battlefield... Earth’s broad, ancient shoulders are stooped, Draped with a glistening blue mantle; Gnarled craggy land Coyly peeks out here, Bursts boldly forth, there; Soaring basalt cliffs Form grim, forbidding mist-shrouded ramparts; Palm-topped coral islands beckon, in balmy turquoise seas... All the while watched over By soaring, diving, Gliding, wheeling seabirds: Albatross, fulmar, Petrel, skua And so many, many others. The shimmering, shining seas move... Aroused by solar heat and polar cold And the wind’s constant caresses; Thus, are the great ocean currents energized, Vast stately rivers in the sea. The oceans pulse, In time with sun and moon; An unending cadence, The tireless ebb and flow, ebb and flow, Of the mysterious mighty tides... To sail, to glide, To cleave Neptune’s liquid skin, To feel the slow, steady rhythm Of swells birthed in the noisy, blustery nursery Of far-off storms; To bob and dance, rise and plunge, Pitch and roll and yaw In the mad giddy rollercoaster Of waves wind-whipped, foam-flecked, That tumble and bubble and grumble and froth And hiss and sigh and roar... To exult in the excitement, The exhilaration, To strain every muscle Fighting to keep balance, Anointed by flying spray, All the while Holding the proud vessel steady on course, Wiping away brine from sun-browned face, Tasting the salt, The essence of the sea... Still the far horizon lures us, Beckoning, Whispering softly, Insistently, “Come to me! I know you want me!” Beneath the wide, bright sun-spackled surface Lies the vast expanse Of the blue kingdom, Reaching down, down, down To night-dark depths... Overwhelming in its immensity, Daunting in its complexity; Home to creatures astounding, Amazing, And beautiful... Countless rotting, rusting hulks Great and small, lie scattered on the floor of the deep waters; There too, Slumber many mariners, At peace in their final resting place... The fury of storms Proved too much For some to withstand, But Man’s lust for wealth and power, His greed and will to dominate, His skill in waging war, Have been the undoing Of a myriad others... The waters of oceans and rivers, Lagoons and lakes, Conceal many wondrous things; They were witness To many events Amazing and terrible, Uplifting and frightening, Wonderful and mysterious... The deep waters so reluctantly Give up their hidden secrets; At great risk and great expense, We uncover truth, bit by bit... But it shall ever be so, This relationship Between the deep waters and us... We shall always wonder, and probe and search And dive and salvage and measure And evaluate... We shall learn much, earn much, lose much As we seek to conquer the oceans, But always we will be back To live out our love affair With the deep waters... © Trevor Dalton October 2013
