I love the spontaneous moments that arise during travel. Today we met with two universities in Vietnam. The latter invited us to lunch. Lunch was not a stuffy, formal gathering, which I was afraid of, rather it was a raucous group of teachers and administrators celebrating the end of national exams. What a cultural treat! Lunch: spicy beef with mint, duck and "duck organs", sausage, shrimp cakes, calamari, whole fish, green rice (pineapple leaves) with scallops, and soup. When they learned I have a seafood allergy, I, and the two other Americans with me, were rewarded with a lovely steak and french fries. Enough for 8 people. Our table had steak, too. Lunch ended with a wonderful fruit tray: longan fruit (similar to a lychee), guava, grapefruit, pineapple, and a few other interesting tidbits. Yum! Did I mention the numerous bottles of beer??? I also had a brief conversation in German with one of the German instructors. Translation: I love my job!
