I love this Amazing Tone Poem by Tchaikovsky. The tone poem used motifs and instruments to tell a musical story, like words would tell a story. Tchaikovsky was a master of this form (and many others also). Listen for the famous Love Melody and the changes it undergoes as Tchaikovsky tells the story of the young lovers set amidst the backdrop of the warring Montagues and capulets. Notice how the orchestra is used to tell this story - strings arguing with woodwinds - Keys arguing with each other. Then, a sublime Love song emerges from that - fragile and soft. It gets overtaken by another furious battle, then emerges one more time in full glory. But eventually it is spoiled with dissonance, and finally obliterated - transforming into a tragic melody played over and over again. Here is a great breakdown of the motifs: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Romeo_and_Juliet_%28Tchaikovsky%29 Friar Lawrence theme Warring families Love theme Warring families reprise Love theme reprise Conclusion This an epic version, with Russian Valery Gergiev conducting. Only a Russian can bring it home like this. I saw him conduct Rachmaninoff a few years ago .. https://youtube/watch?v=Cxj8vSS2ELU
