I love this! So much respect for Wil Wheaton. Such a great response. So, naturally, I wrote a novel about what I thought of it. Please bear with me about the length, but I mean every word I write. I know exactly what its like to be called a nerd in a negative way. All my life, Ive been surrounded with the things that make me happy and that I truly love, but to lots of people, it is what they describe as what nerds like or they just dont like it and feel the need to rudely express their opinions about it. When I was little, I was the little girl that would rather play with Star Wars action figures than what I was told were toys that girls were supposed to play with. And that made me different. That made me the nerd. That made me stand out. Ive come to realize something though as I got older. Being a nerd is not a bad thing at all. In my opinion, I think being a nerd is what makes me who I am. Being a nerd is the greatest feeling in the world. It is a compliment, really. It should never be used negatively, and heres why: I saw a quote a while ago that I love, and that I think is completely true. Being a nerd is being passionate about something you love and not caring about what other people think about it. I dont remember who said it, or if I wrote it correctly, but its something I believe everyone that can proudly call themselves a nerd should know. If you truly love something, something that other people think you shouldnt, or something that makes them call you a nerd in a negative way, you should never let that bring you down. If you are made fun of for something you love by someone, who really cares what they think? If you love it, and if you are passionate, then it doesnt matter what they think of you. If you are happy, then it doesnt matter what they think. As Wil Wheaton said, it does get better. As you get older, you will realize that the people who hate on you for being passionate are the ones who really dont deserve to be in your life. You dont need them if they dont allow you to be yourself and express your love for what you love. They can go on being rude, but never let them bring you down. Hopefully one day, they will realize that they are wrong and that everyone loves something different. And their love can be just as passionate as yours. Maybe, they will decide to take a chance and check out what you love and realize that they like it too. If you love something, then never let anyone change that. No matter what they say, or how much they try to hurt you. If you are happy, then that is all that really matters. One day, you will go out into the big world and see that there are many other people that are just as passionate, as full of love and fandom...ness as you are now. Surround yourself with them, and you will have a world of happiness and others who think like you too. If you are a nerd, be loud and proud about it! Show off your fandoms! Love what you love, and love it loudly. Never be silenced by those who dont understand your happiness. Because one day, you may be saying your vows in Klingon and be looking back and wondering why you cared what they thought at all. I hope you enjoyed my novel. Now please excuse me, while I sip some tea earl grey hot while watching a Joss Whedon show and wearing a bow tie and my replica Jayne Cobb hat from Firefly with my trusty Captain America iPhone by my side. This is what I love, and this is who I am. A wonderful, passionate nerd.
