I love this clip from love and logic. It emphasizes that the more you try to control a kid, the less control you really have. All it does is increase their desire to rebel. It reminds me of what an LDS therapist said on the parenting subject (Maurice W. Harker). He related a story of his dad seeing an lds therapist himself for help with his 5 teenagers. He asked how do i make sure our child turns out a certain way/or/how do we get them to/ how do we make them follow the rules/how do we make them go to school/respect their parents?...... the therapist sat back in his chair and said I hate to tell you this Mr. Harker but youre raising your children the way satan would - that was satans plan to make people do things - make sure they did it. woah - food for thought :) President Uchdorf also said we can learn from failure. If we dont let kids fail, then deal with the consequences, they wont learn. They also go into the world very unprepared. Josh has had to deal with so many things on his mission, but he writes thanking us that we helped prepare him by letting him make choices, and learn from his mistakes. one of the challenges we got in our love and logic class was to never give a command, always give a choice. so instead of saying go brush your teeth you say; do you want to brush your teeth first or get your pajamas on first. after a few days of giving choices for everything Nathan got a little exhausted from making so many choices and said, just tell me what to do! i said no - brush first or pajamas first? he said, no! just tell me what to do!! :) its really fun :) Hes learning how to make choices.
