I love this story and I can certainly identify with what Joy DeGruy is saying in the clip because I have been there in California and Texas. At 19 I was in a store in the Cerritos Mall in Cerritos, California. I walked out of the department store just inches apart along with a group of white girls - next thing I am pulled back in the store because the buzzer went off for theft alert - 20th Century - Fast forward to 2008 - 21st Century - Dallas, Texas area - a store in the Town Center Mall - I am the only black person in the store of about 25 or so customers, yet every step I made I observed this young white woman following me around. To be certain, I detoured around and about in the store for about 10 to 15 minutes to make sure she was following. Once certain, I turned around, almost stepping on her and nicely confronted her and asked for the owner/manager. Explaining to the manager the situation, showing my California driver license, sharing that I was only in the store to purchase souvenirs as well as the fact that I had never stolen anything in my life and while I was being profiled, others in the store couldve stolen the store dry. I got an apology, but here we are in the 21st Century and this type of behavior is still being taught. This was an educational moment and I knew an embarrassing moment for the manager because I called them out on their prejudice behavior in a very articulate and diplomatic humanistic manner where I profiled their arrogance and ignorance.
