I love to watch the tiny ruby throated hummingbirds that visit our area every summer. They are such small, fragile, and yet graceful creatures but did you know they winter in South America. That’s right; this means they have to cross the Gulf of Mexico twice a year. Quite a feat for this miniature aerial acrobat of the avian world – don’t you think? Their name comes from the speed at which they flap their wings (about 80 times per second) it’s so fast, they actually make a humming sound as they fly past. Hummingbirds can fly right, left, up, down, backwards, and even upside down. They can stop on a dime, make sharp right-angle turns and hover like a helicopter by flapping their wings in a figure-8 pattern. Hummingbird’s burn an extreme amount of energy their fast breathing rate, fast heartbeat and high body temperature require that they eat often. This high-speed lifestyle requires an enormous amount of food each day for they’re size. To help with that task, they are equipped with a specialized long tapered bill and slender tongue which they use to lick their favorite food source, nectar, at a rate of up to 13 licks per second. From time to time they need to supplement their high energy diet with a little protein and can be seen snatching small insects right out of mid-air. Like other birds, hummingbirds rely heavily on visual displays to communicate. Depending on the species, they have each developed very specialized signals and courtship dances for attracting mates. As a group they are also very territorial and can be observed chasing one another away from a food source or potential nesting site. If necessary, they will fearlessly defend area from their much larger feathered cousins which can also include birds of prey. Each breed pair of ruby throated hummingbirds lay a clutch of 1 – 3 eggs. Gestation takes place in about 20 days and the young, depending of food availability are ready to leave the nest in about 25 days after hatching. jerrydalrymple
