I love when pro-gun folks say hey! look at cars, they kill people... yes, they do, but for some odd reason we address that problem, as a rational, civilized society, by (1) registering them (2) requiring people who use them to carry INSURANCE so everyone is required to be able to cover possible injuries they cause (3) federally mandating an entire stack of regulations and safety features on them... so I would agree that we should treat guns like cars. but gun laws dont prevent outlaws from shooting people well, rape laws dont prevent rape, murder laws dont prevent murder, same can be said for every law you might name... so should we just give up? I say no. About 600 children die in accidents every year; EVERY one of those deaths was caused by someone who likely said Im a responsible gun owner... or at least they didnt say yeah, I knew that would happen... EVERYONE thinks they are smart enough to handle owning a gun. Tens of thousands die by accident, suicide, in fits of rage... NONE of those dead people bought their gun thinking they would end up dead because of it. Its pretty clear (at least to me) that guns are NOT making us safer, on balance…Richard Flynn- enlightened citizen
