I made a mistake the other day. I was looking for a replacement for my 1975 DOS WordPerfect Office calendar. Im still using XP Pro, but clearly my next computer will have something on the order of Windows: The Next Generation, and all my DOS programs will become archaeological curiosities. It was a very useful calendar for 40 years (seriously...?), but the handwriting is on the wall. After quite a bit of digging I downloaded something called Efficient Calendar and gave installing it a try. It did not go well. Immediately thereafter, every time I opened anything having to do with a link on Facebook, I found myself faced with an explosion of pop-up ads, and, worst of all, my computer lost track of its sound system, which means my microphone could no longer talk to the Dragon. Imagine that — me, back to typing… Ive just finished ruthlessly working my way down the Remove Software window, and killing off everything unfamiliar. It appears now that Ive rooted out most of the offending uninvited apps. Likewise — Callooh! Callay! — the Dragon has recovered from its indisposition, and my typing has returned to a minimum. Which is a wordy way of saying — and it can never be said often enough — be wary of off-brand software...
