I made a statement that it costs less to heat water with Gas. Assuming the electric heater is 100% efficient and the gas about 90 (not exact but realistic numbers for an electric heater and a high efficiency gas) here is a rough comparison BASED ON MY RATES. To heat 8 pounds of water - close to a gallon - from 50 degrees to 150 degrees - reasonable figures - takes 8 BTWs per degree or 800 BTUs. If the heater is set higher or lower or the input water is not 50 degrees this can easily be recalculated. Gas - Take 800 BTUs, divide by 100,000 (BTU/Therm), times $0.98 per therm and it costs about $.0074 to heat a gallon of water. The .98 per therm is 49 cents for Dominion for the gas and .49 for Colombia to deliver it. Electric - Take 800 BTUs equals 0.2343 Kilowatt-hour - at about $.10 per KWH or about $.023 to heat a gallon of water. The electric is cost is nearly 3 times the gas. Some others I have read say two times rater than 3, this may be because they are using the conventional gas not high energy models. No matter what, Gas is less costly to operate. They are initially more expensive as are Gas driers for clothes.
