I made it here safely and am with Mama at the hospital. I have what I believe is good news and answered prayers. Doctors believe what she has is carcinoid syndrome which is associated with tumors in stomach/intestinal track. These tumors in advanced stages produce a hormone which causes severe diarrhea where you become very dehydrated. This is a somewhat rare condition, but can be managed. It is usually not a problem because the liver will neutralize the hormone. However, when there is cancer in your liver (like she has), there is no neutralization. There are many side effects, but losing all this fluid is what she has. They are working to find the right combination of medications at this time and seem to be doing an excellent job. The diarrhea has stopped, and so has the vomiting. The anxiety is under control and she is able to tolerate the pain meds well. She has been sleeping a lot, but was able to eat lunch and is alert when they come in to check vitals (which are all very good!). The doctor asked what she had been doing at home and I was able to tell him about that, he was absolutely amazed that she was as strong and independent considering how long she has had the cancer and how little medication she was taking. He doesnt know my mama! (But he had heard how strong her faith was and her determination to live!!!!! Apparently other medical staff had told him that about her). I asked him if he thought it was possible that once they found right combination of meds would she be able to go home and he said it was very possible, in fact that was our goal. I am beyond happy to get such a good report. Mama has fought this battle with her faith....with nutritious foods...with natural supplements...with the love of her family. Again, tremendous thanks and appreciation for all the prayers. I know my friends and family...when they say they will pray, they DO...and God hears. My mother is an inspiration...and I love her beyond what words can begin to express. I know that my brothers and sisters feel the same way. We will stand together and take care of our mother.
