I made seed cakes the other day and set the in the cold room to set up. I use a basic recipe, no real measurements. I start with about 4 lbs of lard, you can use suet, whatever is handier. Suet melts at a higher temperature than lard, but both work well enough. To that I added sunflower seed, shelled sunflower seeds, raw peanuts, flax seed, barley, peanut butter, oats, cranberries scratch seed and corn meal. What ever you put in make sure you have enough to make a very thick mixture. Pour the mixture into molds. For large seed cakes I used a bunt pan. For smaller cakes that will fit into suet feeders, I use cardboard half gallon milk cartons or shoe boxes. What ever you use line the mold with wax paper to add in taking the finished cake out of the mold. Once filled, set the molds in a cold room, or freezer to set up. To use take the molded cake out of the milk carton, use a knife to cut into sections to fit your suet feeder. The larger cakes I simple set out on a plate in the covered run for the chickens.
