I make it a policy not to laugh at black jokes or use the “n-word” because I understand how sensitive our African American friends are to that stuff. They don’t easily forget the history and pain for their struggles. To me, black people are kind of a good luck charm. They know how to talk to you and they seem to know what to say in the right way and at the right time. When you find yourself a good black friend the best thing you can do is keep them. They have a lot of positive energy and they can be very perceptive. A lot of people tell polish jokes. They don’t necessarily mean it to be hurtful. That’s probably also true of a lot of black jokes. Nevertheless, black history in this country, which hasn’t been entirely positive, makes black people feel their being singled out and demeaned. A lot of people do it but they really don’t think about it from the perspective of black people. I do because I understand how they feel about it. Paula Deen got caught doing what a lot of white people have done. When she offered her apology she at least seemed sincere. She meant her regret. That’s not true for everybody.
