I make my living keeping church organs working all over the state, - TopicsExpress

I make my living keeping church organs working all over the state, and now and then one of our regular customers has an organ emergency -- organ goes down and they have an important service coming up. So I make a long drive, build custom parts, improvise and rig, order parts for overnight delivery, do anything I can to make sure they have their music. But what about the organ in my own church? Would I go to the same lengths when Im the organist whos contemplating a service without his vital instrument? Went to First Christian this evening to practice, and discovered to my disdain that the organ wouldnt come on. I quickly diagnosed a dead computer cage power supply, pulled it out and started looking for the cause. No blown fuse or other obvious problem, and no time to do more extensive troubleshooting. I dashed to the shop and wired together a couple of older power supplies to provide all the voltages necessary to replace the dead unit. I had been contemplating my options -- grab a keyboard, or use the piano, or bring the little choir room Hammond into the sanctuary. Sure, we couldve made do with any of these, but I dearly love that big Allen and sure can make a lot better music with it than with something else. And I realize that a customer can feel the same way when their own organ is down. Thats why Ill go the extra mile to get their organ up and running before Sunday if I possibly can. Its not exactly brain surgery, but we do take pride in doing what it takes to keep our instruments playing wherever they are.
