I may agree with you about certain normative commitments, be they moral or otherwise. Yet the truth of norms are legitimated only within particular social practices that rely on my concurrence with such norms, with which I must agree are binding on my thoughts and behavior. And this is where the shit gets hairy--for whats at stake for me may differ from you. That is, if you are trying to peg your moral commitments within a prevailing system of rights and wrongs--a cultural system of ideas, no less, foreign from my practical interests then appreciate the tension. The only other option is dogmatism, an wrong-headed certitude and arrogance. Here is where I agree with the existentialists: Im committed to the idea of being radically free to choose and to create, to construct, to pull from whatever serves my, and my communitys, well being. Whats objective is the natural, then, the innate sensations, the base sentiments, the tragedies and triumphs of human life with which we all must struggle to make sense of. But Im suspicious of all right and absolutist ways. All one can say with certainty is this: its right, this is right, in that it works me. But Im just saying...
