I may as well just say how I used to be cruel to our family dog. I basically did two things to him: I pulled on his leash quite strongly, which temporarily choked him, and I kneed him on his side, which must have hurt him tremendously. I would do this when I was holding him by his leash and he would bark for more than two seconds. I say this not because I am proud of myself for doing this. On the contrary, even more than three decades after the fact, my treatment of him continues to haunt my conscience, which will not let me rest. However, if I can cut myself any slack at all, I have in the last few years seen short videos as well as pictures of dogs treated even worse than this....dogs starved nearly to death, dogs used to maul other dogs, dogs trapped in tiny cages, dogs cruelly killed for food, dogs repeatedly hit...I did none of these things, nor do I recall ever hitting my dog, although i would sometimes threaten to do so, which would make my dog cower, which in itself was so utterly cruel of me. Lets face it, try as I might, I just cannot escape the fact that at one time in my life, I had the heart of a nazi. I am so sorry, Corky. :-(
