I may be being picky but yesterday I was in Yarrambat and saw a small delivery vehicle from a bakery in Thomastown called Ciabatta Della Nonna. For the vast majority this lovely Italian name evokes an image of an older lady crafting loaves based on a recipe generations old. However I immediately knew this image is false. Ciabatta was created in 1982. (For more information on ciabatta here is a link to the wikipedia entry: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ciabatta) Part of me would like to telephone the bakery and engage them in a conversation about nonnas ciabatta focussing on when she acquired the recipe and how long she has been baking it. It is conceivable that she was present at the genesis of ciabatta as a young woman in her 20s or 30s and today, in her later middle age, she has continued to diligently bake these loaves. My suspicion is that there may actually not be a nonna who baked ciabatta, and that the bakery is thus named to dupe the ignorant and sentimental into purchasing their produce. The bakery may indeed make fine products but the suspected use of false sentimentality in their brand makes me, one who already had the knowledge of the fairly recent creation of ciabatta, less inclined to test their wares. Always look through a brand and ask yourself whether you have fallen for a marketers artificial dream and whether the product that you are consuming is truly of the quality that you seek.
