I may be wasting our time here, as most of you probably cant even read most of this, due to being illiterate ice holes - but wed really like to bring to your attention a wee bit of information that may have escaped you somewhere along the line... In relation to motor vehicles (let’s call them cars and trucks... ), and road usage (using the road...), the term INDICATOR refers to a (mostly) working part of all road vehicles, and historically comes from the meaning, to indicate or something that indicates. The word, ‘INDICATE’, means to show something, point something out, like a sign... Sort of like a clock ‘shows’ or ‘indicates’ the time - and the sign that says ‘Centrelink’ INDICATES where you usually go for money. Do you get that bit now? See, it’s easier than you thought! Anyway - to put this simply, as we know this is the only way you will understand it, the idea behind using a VEHICLE mounted indicator, is TO INDICATE YOUR INTENTIONS TO TURN LEFT OR RIGHT TO OTHER ROAD USERS. Strangely enough, it is in fact possible to perform this incredibly challenging task, from inside your vehicle, by utilising (sorry... using) YOUR vehicles indicator stalk” (the Americans refer to it as a turn signal... think about why...?) in an up and down fashion. And yes... you DO actually have one... its mounted just behind your steering wheel (the round thingy DIRECTLY in front of you when youre driving - and no, NOT your can of UDL...). In MOST Australian motor vehicles, you PRESS DOWN on the indicator stalk to indicate your intention to other road users that you want to TURN RIGHT - and conversely (look it up, its actually a word... ) you should try and LIFT UP the indicator stalk to indicate your intention to other road users that you are going to TURN LEFT. What happens then, is on the outside of your car, both front and back, a bright little orange light blinks on either the LEFT side of your car - or the RIGHT side of your car... (yeah, that’s it - you’ve seen them before, haven’t you!?!). That little orange light WARNS us that you are maybe going to turn soon, and if the orange light is on the left side of your car - then we know that you’re probably going to turn left. However, if the bright little orange light is blinking on the right side of your car, then we believe that you’re probably going to turn right! You need to know, that even though we are obviously much, much, much, much more intelligent (‘smarter’) than you are, we are NOT psychic - unlike your friend, who STILL hasn’t won the Lotto... and we also don’t have any magic powers or computers in our cars that allow us to know, or foresee (yes, thats also a real word... ), that you are going to turn BEFORE you actually turn. The important thing here, is the word INTENTION that I’ve used a couple of times (go back and look for it... ). This means that YOU ACTUALLY KNOW BEFORE YOU TURN, THAT YOU ARE GOING TO TURN (unlike us) - because you have formed an ‘intention’ in your mind (yes, you have one of those too... ) to turn soon. We understand that you probably didn’t know this bit either, but it’s REALLY dangerous to NOT use your indicators when you’re going to turn - as some people might crash into your car, because they didn’t know you were going to pull out in front of them, or stop in front of them, without ANY warning - or ‘indication’!!! In fact, it’s SO dangerous, that’s LOTS of people DO crash EVERY DAY from this, and some people DIE from it - or get horribly injured in a crash. Also, others get horribly injured, or die, from other motorists (‘drivers’) smashing their faces in, for NOT using their indicators... I know!!!???!!! How rude is it - that some people get SO MAD about this!!!???!!! The cheek of some people... But, BECAUSE so many people DO have crashes, and die, and get injured, and get their faces smashed in, the government (sorry.. ‘gubbenmint’ - the people who pay you) made it a LAW that you HAVE TO USE YOUR INDICATORS WHEN TURNING. So if you DON’T use your indicators when you’re THINKING about turning, the Police can beat you up too, and also take away some of the money that the gubbenmint gave to you, and also take away your drivers licence (if you have one) if they feel like it. So yeah, it’s pretty serious, hey... Look, all we’re are asking here, is that you LET US KNOW that you have formed this ‘intention to turn soon’, by using your indicators. It makes us happy when you do this, but it makes baby Jesus cry when you don’t... Have a think about that - do you really want to make a baby cry? Pretty simple really, isn’t it? Thank you for your time and attention, we understand that this was very challenging (‘hard’ or ‘difficult’) for you. But, you will now be able to go out on the road, driving your vehicle (remember what THAT was again...?) and make HEAPS and HEAPS of new friends - SIMPLY BY USING YOUR INDICATOR, BEFORE YOU ACTUALLY TURN!!! Next week, we’ll have a go at learning to put on a seatbelt (don’t worry, it’s actually easier than using indicators - because you only have to do it once per trip!), and next month we’re going to learn all about how to turn OFF your mobile phone before you start driving a vehicle (yes... they have ‘off’ buttons).
