I met Marion Barry in 1990 in Washington while I was attending a conference. He welcomed all of the out of town delegates on behalf of the city of which he was Mayor and had a photographer in tow so if we wished we could have our picture taken with him. At first I declined. My reason was that he was facing an indictment for smoking crack as a result of sting operation. However, I soon changed my mind and posed with the Mayor beside me. What the hell, I thought. Barry actually had quite a decent record in public service on the whole and was very popular with a lot of Washington residents. After serving his 6 month sentence, he returned to municipal politics and was re-elected mayor twice. Anyway, it was a checkered career to say the least. My photograph still hangs on the wall of my den.
