I met last night with workers from Austal Shipyard in Mobile, Alabama. These folks are working to form a union in their workplace. It is like a thirty year time warp. The favoritism, unfair treatment, poor quality work, lack of training, safety violations, lack of professional competent engineering and equipment, and a general arrogance of management towards their workers is classic of a non-union Deep South employer. What is different is this is a foreign owned company. Every single penny of their income comes from public funds- US Navy contracts to build the ships, state and county money for workforce development and facility improvements-
