I met many of the activists referred to in this article in person, when I attended a wonderful festival in Puesti, Romania. They were hardly rolling in cash & neither were they a multitude as this former Mayor would have the NY Times journalist believe. They were from all parts of Romania & very dedicated to maintaining their superbly healthy lifestyle & their aquifers upon which the population of the farming area depends. Gazproms money was far from evident as they ferried me 300 kilometres from the airport to the affected zone. I was crammed in an activists car with three others & we dined on chocolate bars! All the bands performing at the festival played gratis & the sound system was quickly funded by everyone chipping in a few precious coins. I am getting thoroughly SICK of hearing this ludicrous assertion, first bandlied about by a NATO official - and I would ask them for their evidence & sources. If activism is now a paid profession I am owed an astonishing amount of reubles from Russia. I last estimated the equivalent of 78,000 pounds but since my efforts have doubled recently I would expect closer to 150,000 pounds to make its way mysteriously into my bank account!! How did Andrew Higgins, the author of this fiction, find the disgraced former Major, who clearly has his own agenda, so willing to make such unfounded accusations? I wonder how much the NY Times paid HIM? IDIOTS.
