I met two sides of America today. One is diverse, deep in faith, and has worked hard and seen both ups and downs in life. The other is shrill, homogenous, paranoid and ignorant of what people fought for to create the country we have. I met 2 African American women who are long time care providers and know a union means the chance to create better opportunities. I met a 70 year white man who spent 35 years working for Minnesota Rubber and was a longtime member of the Machinists union. Who spoke of proudly paying union dues and seeing the difference between underfunded pension plans that existed prior to the union coming to town and strong plans that are paying a good retirement. And then I met a 50-60 year old white woman who was angry and prevented me from speaking because she was annoyed the union was calling and visiting her so much to get her vote. She said she knows unions have a role but they also destroyed Detroit. I guess when I think of unions and how this country became a force for good, I think of the black ladies and the machinist. I hope the older lady wakes up before she destroys all thats positive in this fallen but beautiful country.
