I must say that it was unfortunate on the part of the Central government to unilaterally do away with the Planning Commission that came into being in 1950, which had been playing a pivotal role in the development of the country. India is still a country where the fruits of development have not reached all sections of its society. This is precisely why planning is essential. Over the years, the Planning Commission has been quite instrumental in ensuring social equality, promotion of decentralized planning and in the monitoring of human development; especially that of the socially and economically backward segments in the countrys population.
