I name my things. I know. Anthropomorphizing. Giving living, sentient attributes to things that are neither living nor sentient (though I wonder about my Palm IIIxe PDA at times. It seems immortal). Ive named my cars, my computers, and especially my telescopes. There is a practical aspect to naming these things, though, and especially the telescopes. To describe a telescope in detail in a astronomical journal, for instance, can get tedious. For instance, you would need to write something like 60mm f. 7.5 refractor; that telescope is my oft used and reliable Bianca. By simply writing Bianca I know the instrument. And thus the tradition continues. I decided to test my new 70mm on the improved tripod this evening. Even though the skies were smeared over by numerous cirrus, I was able to effectively take the telescope to a startling 280x magnification (not something Id recommend) before chromatic aberration made the image impossible. It seems to work best at no higher than 200x, which is still considerable. 140x it handled with ease. So, the somewhat damaged $4.95 Celestron 70mm I rescued has turned out the be a grand investment. But it needed a name, and I found one, looking me in the face all along. Celeste.
