I need to discuss something pretty serious with you all. My husband, Steve, lives with a devastating disease, Primary Progressive Multiple Sclerosis (PPMS). The problem with this disease is that it doesnt show itself in ways easily understood. For example, Steve couldnt get out of bed today until around 4:30 pm. When Steve finally got up (after taking enough medication to finally get the pain manageable and by wearing multiple lidocaine patches), he can still barely get around, even with his cane. This isnt an every day thing, but it is becoming more and more frequent. He has tremors and deals with excruciating nerve, bone, and muscle pain. Some days, his speech is slurred. Other days, its fine! But he can no longer take the dogs for long walks, which was something he enjoyed so much. Most days, he cant take the stairs, even going down. Youd never know it because he doesnt reveal this to most people. He reminds me of my mama because she always told people that she was fine. Thats how Steve is with his funny self and nice ways. I dont say any of this for you to feel sorry for us. Our life together is wonderful and valuable. Its just different than other peoples! Still, I hope you, my dear family, friends, and colleagues, understand if I cancel coming to things at the last minute. I also hope you know how hard it is for Steve or me to ask for help, but were beyond blessed by your kindness and love, every single time that we do. If Im slow to answer an email or if I seem distant, then know that were all learning to adjust to a different life -- again, not a worse one, not a bad one, just a different one. I appreciate sharing life with all of you, in big and small ways. Love and hugs to you!
