I needed to read this today. Maybe some of you dont know that Ethan was diagnosed with autism at age 3. Hes very high functioning, has friends, and is well beyond where we thought he would be a few years ago. That said, he needs extra attention daily to complete his lessons, complete chores, to read new social situations, to deal with little quirks, food textures, clothing etc. We have tried not to over-shelter him (yes, I do believe in some sheltering of young children :) and help him deal with the realities of the world in which we live, to accept himself, to have integrity, to understand that some people will make fun of his struggles, and yes, it hurts.
