I never ever “argue” religion (except as it relates to political discourse), but I had to comment on a video where a very prominent biblical scholar attempted to disprove the divinity of Christ by noting the inconsistencies in the accounts of the crucifixion in the four gospels. So - it being Easter and all - I thought I’d share that comment, despite the fact that it was a very late night composition, so it’s not the best written post Ive ever formulated. Here goes: My mother was in a terrible car wreck a few weeks ago. One of the first responders, lets call him Matthew, would have noted, Im sure, that her overriding concern was that her daughter was OK. The second, lets call him Mark, saw only her extreme fear that when they started up the saw to cut her out of the car, that they were going to cut her legs off to get her out. The third, lets call him Luke, was moved by her belief that they were putting a sheet over her head because she was dead, instead of the actual reason, which was that they wanted to shield her face when they shattered the glass. The fourth, lets call him John, was impressed that she fervently thanked God over and over that they survived. Bottom line is, Ive never given much credence to the criticism that four different people emphasized four different aspects of the crucifixion. Personally, Id be more wary of collusion if they all were exactly the same, but thats just me... I guess all these fine fellows and ladies just felt the need to make up wild stories so they could lose everything they had, wander the world as homeless vagabonds, and be tortured to death. That makes more sense than if they actually witnessed something to inspire such sacrifices, dont you think?
