I never really understood how the smart asian stereotype was a bad - TopicsExpress

I never really understood how the smart asian stereotype was a bad thing. but somehow in my childhood, I told myself I didnt wanna become that smart asian in my class even though I knew I was extremely bright and could excel academically. in my recent visit to Dartmouth College, the student who brought me in and showed me around campus was an 18 year old freshman born to Chinese immigrants. not only did he play piano and hockey throughout middle and high school, homie had been studying for the SAT basically EVERYDAY since 3rd grade. he wasnt born a genius; he worked harder than everybody else because he had to. because his parents left all they knew behind and sacrificed everything so they could have a better life. hes been working to repay his debt of gratitude to his parents and to make his family proud. although I strayed away from the academic route, Im proud to say that Im beginning to truly understand myself through poetry and hip hop, and I do everything in hopes of making my family smile. I have so much respect for minorities and people who come from immigrants families, and feel ashamed for ever looking down on asian americans in the Ivy League. I made sure to get a Dartmouth hoodie before I left. I been rockin that shit everyday.
