I never really understood the appeal of familiars (standard ones, not improved ones) until I got a budgie. Sure, theres minor skill bonuses, potential scouting, and some gimmicky tricks that are more complicated (and less effective) than just hitting things, but its not much. Perhaps the best argument I ever saw for familiars over bonded objects was somebody pointing out that a familiar doesnt force concentration checks when it dies. As far as selling points go, This one is less awful to lose access to is a pretty terrible pitch. Turns out its mostly about having an awesome little pet.
