I never worked there, but I had friends who worked at WHBQ in Memphis. I think WHBQ was a very important station where stuff happend that changed radio in ways that are almost incalculable in their impact. We all know the famous Dewey Phillips Elvis story from 1954, but WHBQ was a real gamechanger in the radio business and we all had a lot more fun than we might have had if the pioneers at WHBQ had not been such trendsetters. I have talked to people from the United Kingdom who used to dream about having a station like WHBQ back when BBC radio programming was so rigid and staid. A lot of kids in Britain heard about WHBQ long before the BBC finally lossened up enough to play some Beach Boys, Beatles, and Roy Orbison records.
