I normally bite my tongue when I see these messages (I get them quiet often) ... but this morning, a message in my inbox made me sad... and then it made me angry. The message read (with the potential clients permission): I love your work! Id really love to book with you, only if I didnt have all these stretch marks... or all this fat. Do you think you could make me look skinny? I have 3 kids, and I never do anything for myself... First, I was sad... I was sad that she viewed herself with such negativity. And then - I was angry. I wasnt angry with her, I was angry with her view on herself. I was angry at the ideals that are forced on us as mothers, and women in general. I was angry that she asked me if I could make her skinny, because thats what society tells us we should be... is skinny. We believe that if weve had children, gain weight, have some imperfections, were no longer beautiful. We believe that because we are mothers (such a precious gift to cherish), plus-size, or even skinny- we could never be as pretty as those other girls in photos! We believe that because we have those depending on us, we do not have the right to do something nice for ourselves or set time aside... I will be DAMNED if I will allow society to tell me if I shall love myself or not. Ladies, Please love yourselves. Look down and smile at those stretch marks , they were all worth it! Be good to yourselves, theres not enough time to be anything but! I
