I normally do not post what takes place in prison sanghas for a variety of personal reasons. However, I have to share a little of what took place at CSP-SAC, a maximum security prison. We had 20 men take part. Two inmates were new and were rude and disruptive. I suggested that if they did not want to take part, I was happy to call guards to escort them out. They settled down and the sangha then sat for 25 minutes. Afterwards one of the new guys asked, Whats the point of meditation? I asked the regular members of our sangha to respond to his question. Wow! Responses ranged from, I hated everyone so much I could have stabbed guys... now I just feel compassion for them, This place is sacred to me. I have to come here every week to remind myself that I am important, I acted habitually... now I see what a mess Ive made of things and I dont want to do it anymore. The two new guys were quiet and later told me they would be back. There are evenings like tonight that remind me why I do this...
