I noticed a post on here a few weeks back that Remsen School District was bringing back the School Fair. Holland Patent had them, along with Remsen, until the early 70s I believe. The bus garage was turned into a cattle barn, Home Economics had food demonstrations, the Art Dept had an Art Show As FFA dwindled due to fewer farm kids the emphasis changed and for a few years the FFA Alumni held a calf auction to help keep the fair afloat. Local farmers would consign calves to the sale, the FFA Club would get the calves ready and sell them. The FFA kept a commission and the farmer received a check for the balance of what the calf sold for. About the second or third year Maynard Anken was in charge of procuring the consignments, and conducting the sale. If some thing was going to happen to the smooth flow of events history has always showed us that it was going to happen on Maynards watch. The high school boys were washing a calf with the water hose when the calfs halter came untied and the calf was free. Free to run, to jump, and to head off into the brush land that surrounded most of the village of Holland Patent. Pursuit was instantly initiated, if you are from HPCS that means the students chased the calf, but the calf made good its get away. Maynards brother, Charlie, was quick to find out about this new development. Probably Maynard went to Charlie to ask for advice be cause in Maynards words, Why this is terrible, nothing like this has ever happened, its bad, really bad, the calf is gone, probably been eaten by a bear, cougar, even a hungry deer, those deer they are mean, Its bad, I mean it is bad. no trace, someone could have picked it up, why stuck it in the back of their car and be gone, oh this is terrible. (I did use extra punctuation just to make it easier for the reader to read.) Maynard was distraught. The escaped calf was consigned by Robert Perry and Charlie being Charlie looked at Maynard and said, Boy, Maynard I wouldnt want to be in your shoes when you go up and tell Bob what happened, and then have to ask for a replacement calf!
