I now remember why I graduated from college : in order to get away from it. During my job interview, they were very clear on the point that tuition is free for employees. Great, I thought, but they didn’t tell me was that while it was free, it was also practically impossible. It’s taken me 18 months to get to the point where I could register for class. At first I had to prove I’d graduated from high school. Fair enough, but given that this is my alma mater, I was puzzled as to why I had to reproduce my high school transcript. Nevertheless, I paid for a transcript to be sent to my house, then carried it by hand to the Records office which produced it. OK, I can deal with that. Next, after attempting to register, I got a notification saying my registration was withheld by Student Health Services. After contacting them, I learned that I needed to prove I’d been vaccinated for Measles, Mumps, Rubella, and Hepatitis B. After 7 months of a series of hepatitis shots, and 3 blood tests to prove I’m immune to the other diseases, I got through that hurdle. No, it’s not over. Next, thinking I was finally through the hard part, I began registering for classes. Due to delays in my immunization processing, everything I wanted to take was already closed. So I wrote a letter to the department head asking to please make an exception for me. OK, I can deal with that. But then I got notification that my fee waiver form had not been recieved. So I went to my boss’ boss, got that form signed and delivered it to HR. Two days later, and a day after the deadline, I get another “your classes will be cancelled due to lack of payment” notification. This time I learned that HR had the wrong form, so I had to hike a couple miles in the heat, get another form, and another signature and take it to HR. From there I took the form, by hand, to the Bursar’s office for delivery. I won’t know until Tuesday if I can take class or not. Ever wonder why no one’s getting college degrees anymore?
