“I object to violence because when it appears to do good, the good is only temporary; the evil it does is permanent.” -- Gandhi Using force to achieve some means, however desirable those means, cannot be the foundation of a lasting civil society. Tolerating such force only teaches that force is ok, that people around you can be used without respect as free-willed individuals. This is destructive in the long-term as it predictably leads to greater pursuit of such methods and it increases conflicts. Sadly, people often forget that this is the foundation of politics and the State, imposing your will on others who disagree. Actions which they recognize as initiation of force in their personal life appear differently to them when coming from government. When the intrusions and control grow painful enough to raise widespread concerns, you should look beyond the symptoms (abuse and corruption with varying degrees and extents) and consider the deep-rooted cause. But it is hard to reject initiating force altogether when you support and enjoy some applications which appear to do good.
