I occasionally come up with the dreaded “half a plot” story - TopicsExpress

I occasionally come up with the dreaded “half a plot” story idea, where you’ve got some great scenes mapped out, but they don’t quite add up to a full narrative, just one limb and a torso. What I’ll sometimes do is take those ideas and mash them into another half a plot idea, to create a full story. As writers, I suspect we often go back to our discarded ideas bin, to rework them. Here’s a fascinating example. Bowie wrote “Tired of My Life” when he was a teenager, but never went further with it at the time. Years later he pulled it out of his bin and recorded it for possible use on the Hunky Dory album, but then decided against using it. Years and years later, he pulled it out again, reworked the music and lyrics, and turned it into “It’s No Game” for the Scary Monsters album. This is the Hunky Dory outtake. You’ll hear some of the similarity at :30, but at 1:30 it’s even more clear, even to some of the same lyrics being used: “Throw a rock against the road”, “Put a bullet in my brain”, among others. https://youtube/watch?v=VDCHqejcOfI
