I often describe the Japanese way of communicating to Westerners - TopicsExpress

I often describe the Japanese way of communicating to Westerners with this illustration. The Japanese is holding a feather and you are holding a hammer. Cross-culturally this often causes problems because no matter how hard they hit you with their feather it wont get your attention and no matter how lightly you tap them with your hammer they will be scared just at your approach. But within the confines of Japanese society, while it might just look like a peaceful demonstration and not really civil unrest as the headline reads, for Japan they are beating their feathers very hard, and those around are beginning to notice. Taken in concert with the unfortunate individual who immolated himself at Tokyos largest train station in front of hundreds yesterday a message is both being sent and will be taken notice of - whether by politicians or voters is yet to be seen.
