I often feel like this with many of my kids homework assignments.... Im all for creative thinking & finding other ways to solve a problem when the initial approach doesnt work... BUT when it takes longer to figure the problem out using this method compared to the normal subtraction approach, is it worth the aggravation & frustration it causes the parents & the students? This is a problem easily done in ones head... without all of the overkill... I blame common core for many kids not knowing their math facts anymore... a number line is like giving them extra fingers to count on... just do the math!
