I often get asked how snakes breed. This is a pr. of NC Canebrake Rattlesnakes (C. h. atricaudatus) locked up. The male will insert one of his two hemipenes into the cloaca of the female where it swell & lock the two together. The noticeable bulge right before the cloaca signifies a successful attempt. These two were stuck together all day long, poor guy got drug around the cage all day by the female trying to get away. These breedings will often result in the male damaging or loosing one of his hemipenes.....ooouuch!!!
