I often hear accusations leveled at atheists like, You deny Gods existence so you can justify your immoral lifestyle!. The suggestion being made is that if one denies Gods existence their moral compass must be all askew, and that there must be some evil they harbor in their heart which they can only indulge in a godless universe. However, Im of the opinion that the moral high ground often belongs to the atheist, for a majority of them have only ever been presented with the monster God of hellfire and brimstone, and in my estimation, a strong sense of morality would tell us to reject and resist such a being, just as we would a Hitler or a Kim Jong Un. You see, cruelty, oppression, and tyranny are the most hideous and disgusting of evils, and when youve only been presented with a God who daily indulges in such things, it actually takes a strong, inward sense of morality to reject Him. What I wonder is why those hiding behind claims of morality like fig leaves are so apt and eager to believe in this type of God! Maybe were (notice the quotes) the ones guilty of seeking justification to indulge in evil acts. Maybe the separatism, violence, hatred and tendency to divide is a truer evil, and maybe were the ones using the existence of an angry God, who looks nothing like Jesus, to justify immorality? Maybe rejecting every and any God who doesnt look like mercy, compassion and peace is the most moral thing we could do, and maybe accepting, on blind faith, the existence of a violent, cosmic dictator, is actually the height of immorality? Just something to think about.
