I often hear people complain about people getting fired because of what they say or their conduct. The response is usually whatever happened to freedom of speech? The first amendment only protects individuals from the government making laws to limit speech. In other words, you cant go to jail for saying Obama isnt an American citizen or any other opinion (with limited exceptions). But in the private sector, your job (or Donald Sterlings under the NBA owners agreement) is not protected by the First Amendment. In the private sector saying stupid things can have real consequences and the 1st amendment right to freedom of speech has no application.
