I often surprise people when I say its not my job to motivate them. This is a common occurrence b/c people tend to gravitate towards the idea that its a coachs job to motivate. Now dont get me wrong Im not saying that I cant be motivating, because I certainly can be. However to understand what Im truly saying youve got to understand the difference between motivation and inspiration which are 2 variables people often confuse. Ive always explained inspiration as the cool shiny thing that everyone loves to see and it gets the heart pumping along with causing those little hairs on your neck to stand up on end. Thats inspiration. Inspiration is great, but its only temporary. However motivation is quite the opposite. You see motivation isnt temporary. Its a constant nonstop thing. You see motivation involves all those early mornings, late evenings, working through the weekends, blood, sweat, and tears. Motivation is not given its innate and can only grow from being earned. So dont confuse these two variables. Inspiration is the catalyst and motivation is the fire that spreads.
