I often try to warn people against the effects of deeply ingrained media bias. As much as I love that people use my blog and social media site as a source of daily news, I think it’s WRONG to only rely on one source to help you frame your opinion on any topic matter, including my own. But I can understand how people can be easily susceptible to media bias, because it even happens to my hyper-aware ass sometimes too. When I first heard about Shanesha Taylor’s story, it was presented as, “mother leaves children in hot car to go take job interview!” That headline instantly made me dislike Shanesha and believe that she is nothing more than an unfit parent. When I heard she was arrested, I rejoiced at the fact that her children would get another shot at life with someone far more responsible as their parent. And then I decided to do more research, and I realized that everything I THOUGHT I knew about the case was bullshit. Shanesha is NOT some unfit mother gallivanting around, children in toe, with reckless abandon. She is a homeless single mother with no family, friends or child’s father around to give her the help she needs. If your mind STILL can’t process the hopelessness of that situation, think about Will Smith in “The Pursuit of Happyness”, except instead of one child, he has two. And instead of a child that is grown enough to walk, talk and be self-aware, he has a new born and a 2 year old. That is the life Shanesha was living and this seems to be what post people are overlooking when we talk about this story. As much as you can try and find a “logical” solution, there is a systemic failure in our society that left her with NO other option – except not going to the interview, failing to pull her family out of poverty, and being demonized by you douchebags for not doing “enough” to support her children. thisisyourconscience/2014/04/the-one-thing-too-many-people-are-missing-about-the-shanesha-taylor-tragedy/
