I once had a stand up comic tell me that comedians are some the most unhappy people that you’ll ever meet. That their humor is fueled by an inner lack of identity and a lack of peace. I don’t know how true that is, but when I heard about the apparent suicide of Robin Williams, it’s the first thing I thought of. It’s just so sad. It is yet another reminder that no amount of success and no person can bring us lasting joy. Sure they may provide moments of happiness, but lasting joy in good times and bad only come by having the presence of God in our lives. Psalm 16:11 says, You will show me the path of life: in your presence is fullness of joy; at your right hand there are pleasures for ever more.” The joy that comes with being filled with the Holy Spirit remains whether things are going well or things are falling apart. Anything else is just a continuous grab at anything to fill the void in our hearts. A void that can only be filled by God. 2 Corinthians 4:18 says that, We fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen, since what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.” Everything that this world has to offer is temporary and will eventually fade away. Only one thing lasts forever and can truly fill the void in all of our lives. That is our relationship with God through Jesus Christ. There is only one source of lasting and unlimited joy. Maybe that’s why the Bible also says in Nehemiah 8:10 that, The joy of the LORD is your strength.”
