I once hitchhiked from Santa Fe NM. We had taken off from KC in my new VW Beetle but hit a 250 lb deer so left it at a shop in Emporia Ks and got on a night bus to Santa Fe. We were the only non-Native Americans on the bus and being mischevious spirits we started singing songs like America and then they would sing a song back to us. When we got to Santa Fe, my friend who was a follower of Don Juan, the mexican shaman, said he felt we should split up. He stuck out his thumb and a beautiful blonde in a Mercedes convertible stopped and off they drove to Tucson, with her paying all expenses and being a most interesting travel companion. I stuck out my thumb and an old car, leaking brake fluid, stopped and I got in. They were 4 prisoners on work release with one their girlfriends with them. She only spoke Spanish but I quickly understand she thought they should rob me so when they stopped to pee into the oncoming traffic I got out with my backpack and ran with them drunkenly following me but giving up. I got another ride to the Alb. airport and never hitchhiked again. I learned my lesson.

When I watch stuff like this it makes me so envious of Americans!
