I once worked with a very wise young man named Jem. It was useful having him as a wing man because he had a great sense of humour (which is essential if you work with me) and some v ery useful skills. Part of his function was to roady. Now he could pack as much gear into a small saloon as most folk would need a pantechnican for But that’s not why I mention him. No He had another great quality If I was about to do something which might be unwise he would spot it and tell me. When you get into a position where you have a positive reputation and people start to put you on a pedestal you need someone around to kick your ass sonetimes and bring you down to earth. I have always tried to have at least one ass kicker in my possee. Too often folk who get a wee bit of status surround themselves with sycophants (arse lickers instead of arse kickers) But that’s not why I mention Jem Btw- Jem if you are out there somewhere – get in touch No The reason I mention him is that he had a gift for sorting things out with the right word at the right time One day I was in a panic. It was the da y before a rather ambitious event. We had been working for months on putting on a concert- a variety show with 19 acts and a total of almost 100 performers. Every thing that could go wrong was going wrong in the final days I was worrying and getting frantic. ---until Jem said--------- STOP WORRYING ABOUT WHATS GOING TO HAPPEN BECAUSE SOMETHING WILL--------and that put me right – and I was able to really enjoy the subsequent 36 hours I have taken that attitude on as an important element in my way of being So Sometimes an idea to do a particular thing will enter my head and my sensible monitor will gjve me a whole load of reasons why its not a good idea But I have learned to ignore the logic of the monitor and just do it Following my instinct Something always happens and its usually good So Yesterday I had the urge to send out loads of invites to people asking them to come and drum with me this afternoon Now+- sensible said -- its too short notice--- what if no one comes- what if just one person comes—what if too many come to fit in your house –what if—what if—what if- Well I told my sensible monitor to lip up and I sent out the invites Trusting in the process. It became a wonderful afternoon With exactly the right number of people there But there woulda been room for you dear reader Of course it woulda been exactjy the right number however many had turned up—its been that kind of day I was exhausted at lunchtime – hadly able to keep my eyes open But this afternoon session really woke me up. First off Kimberly came with her three wonderfull children. And they really are good people. And they are also very good drummers. There was some beautiful bass drum rhythm work going down – gentle and sweet Then Rob Ben came and we gave the children a swift djembe lesson. They played a while more and then had to go. Soon after that Phillip came in and joined me and Rob.he was followed by Biant Singh-==and we then had the chemistry. We played around with some neat rhythms and did a little talking We made a few arrangements for things we are going to do and it musta been getting on for 6.30 when we finally called it a day; Four and a half hours of rhythm work in a small group of really beautiful people Thankyou – all of you who were there for contributing to making a really nice day And it cost me nothing I think we might do this again—if you would like to come along next time ------watch this space
