I only have three friends who are into comics in a way i can really talk about them with them. Most my lit-nerd friends dont really read comics, and most of my comic reading friends read it because the characters are cool and fun. Both are okay, I mean Im not hating... But I read comics for the deep laden metaphor, the marriage of avant garde storytelling and inventive presentation methods ,and the use of color, pacing, and atmosphere to craft a more accessible/digestible world than prose and a more intimate world than film/animation. Yes I like superhero comics, and yes some of my favorite works have been kickbutt action series like Geoff Johns Aquaman or Dan Slotts Superior Spider-Man... But Im in it for the unique stuff, the things you can only do in comics, with that intersection of still images and narrative. Matt Fractions Hawkeye, a deeply personal espionage dramedy about what it takes to not suck at being a superhero when all youve got is hand eye coordination. Cliff Chiang/Brian Azarellos Wonder Woman, that paints Olympus with the same brush as the mafia, portraying the gods as the first crime family, and how Diana comes to terms with her heritage and the atrocities that man kind and God kind are capable of. I just feel like there is this ENTIRE MEDIA like film or prose that I like and barely any of my friends even take a second glance at.
