I opened my bank account at Barclays when I was 5 and kept it there as i traveled the world with the army. Soon after I joined up I went on a bit of a last leave bender before i left UK for my first posting to Germany, running up a small overdraft.I never received a nasty letter from the bank. (In those days running up debts or getting married without permission could both get you sacked from the army). The lovely manger Don Bean who had been a serviceman himself, just siddled up to my dad at rotary lunch that Thursday and inquiring how I was getting on with the Colours just asked him to check if Id lost my Barclaycard! Well the old man was straight on the phone giving em an earful! So it was I who wrote to Don of course apologising that I had been enjoying my last leave and that my pay in Germany would be about treble what it was in UK and the situation would be rectified with my next paycheck!
