I ordered Asimovs 1250-page companion to the Bible. First off, you have to respect a progressive secularist who wrote a 1250-page book about a religious text. Secondly, I am super-excited to read the book, because, as best I can ascertain from the interwebs, Asimov traces the historical, linguistic, political, and scientific developments that correlate to the stories and events in and around the Bible -- which sounds infinitely fascinating to me. Reviews on Amazon say he does not waste time grinding a secular axe, but rather just lays out the historical-developmental facts in his hallmark clear and incisive prose. [Side note: I cant actually start this until the dissertation is done, but I found a mint 1st-edition of the hardback for $20, so I ordered it. I will set this beside my computer with a bow on it, a present I give to myself when the dissertation is done.]
