I originally posted this in the Castlegar Soapbox - I want to share it here too....... I just want to tell a little story, about people coming together to discuss ways to better their community...... Yes, its true, I dont live in Castlegar. My home is in Greenwood. Very small community of about 700 people. Not much in the way of industry, a lot of heritage and history, lots of seniors. Now, youd think that with only 700 people, everyone would get along, right? Wrong. Just like any community, even the smallest have issues, and problems, and people getting into conflicts with others. During our election, I put together an election group much like this one was, and the one in Grand Forks, and a bunch of other places in the Boundary. And there was a whole bunch of discussions during the campaign, and people learned about issues, and candidates, and government, etc etc. All good stuff, the election was better forit, and our community was better for it too. After the election, it got turned into a Soapbox too, and people continued to come together to discuss things. Same as here. About the election and the future, and all kinds of things. Sorry, my story is dragging on. Apologies. I tend to go on and on sometimes. Used to get docked marks for writing too many words by my teachers in university. Still havent learned, I guess. Anyways, something really interesting started happening in Greenwood. Something I didnt really expect. First, people came together to open up our outdoor skating rink, that hasnt been open in years. They started talking about it on the group, and a bunch of people organized, and volunteers came together, and now our rink will be open. Other people decided that they are going to be more active with council, and are going to attend meetings, to learn whats going on, and to be more involved, in the government of our community. And now? Well, now the discussions on the group are turning into face to face social meetings of like minded people. Coffee talks. We had one last night. Had three tiny little girls under the age of two jumping all over me for two hours while everyone else talked (and who says I cant be useful.....). Moral of the story? I am absolutely blown away by the change that is possible, just through talking to one another. It redeems my faith in Margaret Meades famous quote: Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, its the only thing that ever has. Thanks for listening. :)
